Subject: {DHMN-discussion} March 25th at the Food Pantry Maker Meeting

Good news everyone!

I’ve now got the key to the building, and I was shown how to enter,
take care of the heat etc.

There is insurance on the building for the public to come, but if we
were to meet there every month the owner would like for us to get our
own insurance for our riskier meetings. His insurance is for laid back
church type meetings there.

The Internet is a wireless AT&T DSL Broadband 2WIRE box, with four
ports for us to add on to. He didn’t know the speed offhand, but I’d
guess it’s 3-6MB/s. I believe the configuration password is printed on
the side, so we could probably access it. Any suggestions and help
with configuring a router for public use would be great, I’ve got a DD-
WRT router I’ll bring.

The food storage part of the building will be locked, but we’d have
access to most everything else, which is the one big main church
sanctuary type room(with tables and chairs), the loading bay/workshop,
restrooms, kitchen,small walled in young children play area(free germs
for everyone!) and free parking (15-20 cars approximately?) in the
dedicated parking lot. I didn’t get to take any pictures while I was
there, I didn’t think it would be appropriate to take pictures while
lots of people were there.

Time is 10:00am – ??? (whenever we want. 4am?)

Invite anyone you would think would be interested. Bring your spouse
and children. DHMN members are asked to take responsibility for safety
and well being of everyone and the building. Power tools/soldering
irons are welcome, safety goggles are mandatory.

He said we could help ourselves to the coffee and coffee pots, as they
have tons of coffee in storage. Bring some snacks or a dish to share,
we’re having a Make celebration! No alcohol, please.

Please bring some food, gently used clothing, pots,pans,dishes, and
toys to donate to the Pantry. They get about 200 needy families every
week, and it all goes to help somebody.

There is a suggested donation of $5.

Most importantly, bring something to make! Bring something to finish,
something to share, something to show off, something to start. Or just
come to help others, be a human test subject, or just plain take up
space.

I’m sure I’m missing tons of stuff here, so ask your questions and
I’ll do my best to answer them. Then could someone edit this thread
and post it on the main DHMN page?

It’s alive!  My first print on my cobbled-together printer.  It’s actually supposed to be twice as tall, but family obligations made me cancel the print after 2 hours (What?  You want to eat?  Can’t you see I’m printing in plastic here?).  Actually, this was also the first time both my children gathered around one of my projects and said “Oh, that’s cool!”
Mid-Print
The extruder was built using plastic parts Tim B printed on the ‘official’ DHMN RepRap.  (Technically, mine is referred to as a ‘RepStrap’ because it’s not built to a standard design.)  Thanks for all your help and advice, Tim!  My extruder output was awful until I remembered that Tim really cranks down the screws pressing on the plastic filament.
End Print
I still have a lot of settings to tweak, but I am ecstatic that it actually worked.  The “raft” on the bottom of the cup is meant to compensate for uneven print beds, so probably isn’t needed.  The strings inside can be cleaned up when I deal with a backlash issue in the extruder.  I don’t even think it holds water – wait…  Yes it does!  At least as long as a shot glass usually holds it’s contents.

Unfortunately my desktop mill weighs a ton, so I won’t be taking to any DHMN meetings.  So I’ll just have to build a portable one now… :)

Yes, that’s the temperature regulating Arduino strapped to the top of the Z-axis with cable ties.  Aren’t cable ties awesome?
